What's so bad about being a “Good Girl”? You might be wondering? The short answer is everything. A Good Girl is the exact opposite of a girl who is herself. A Good Girl is an unfailing people pleaser, who feels like she must be selfless, obliging, and get along with everybody no matter how she's treated. She is unerringly nice and bites her tongue rather than risk making someone feel uncomfortable. She smiles when she's sad, laughs when she's angry, and drops hints instead of asking for what she wants. She won't put anyone out on her account. Being a Good Girl is not really about being a good person. In fact being a Good Girl is not really about being good at all. It's about being compliant and subservient and trying to measure up to some impossible ideal set up by someone else. The Good Girl Syndrome forces girls and women into a straight jacket sweetness and light where they must ignore their needs and repress their feelings. It's about girls performing for others, conforming to suffocating expectations, putting others' needs ahead of their own. Good Girls in short are not themselves. Before we go any further, you might like to take out pop quiz to find out if you are a Good Girl. It's quite possible for men to have a touch of the Good Girl Syndrome too. This isn't about gender. It's about being inauthentic, hiding or invalidating your emotions and needs in order to please other people. The quiz is in the PDF next to this lesson, so be sure to download it.
