How to tell if your child has a screen addiction
Let’s talk about a term we’re hearing a lot lately—"screen addiction."
It’s everywhere in the media, and as a parent, it can spark a lot of worry, right?
But here’s the good news: we can probably take a deep breath and let go of some of that parent guilt.
The fact that your child loves screens doesn't automatically mean they’re addicted.
Screen addiction is actually more complex than just loving screens or spending lots of time on devices.
True addiction involves compulsive behaviour, where it’s impacting your child's health, relationships, or daily life.
So instead of focusing on "how much" screen time is happening, let’s focus on balance. Is screen time interfering with your child’s sleep, friendships, or their mood? Are they still interested in other activities like playing outside, or family time? If they are, it’s likely you don't need to worry.
Let’s give ourselves a little grace here. Screens are part of our world, and while it’s always good to set limits and encourage variety, loving screens isn’t the same as being addicted to them.
